externship weeks 4 & 5

Week 4
April 27th – Monday
First thing in the morning we received a call from a client who had brought their dog in for “springer rage” the dog had quickly become uncontrollable and this morning it bit the owner drawing blood. Later in the day they brought the dog in to be put down and because of the bite we had to send the dog to the University for Rabies testing. Bernie the pug came in for a recheck after the tooth extraction he is gaining weight and looking much better than the last time he was in. I ran 3 4dx tests and gathered prevention meds for patients.

April 28th – Tuesday
We had 2 dentals and a lumpectomy. I did the second dental. That was very cool. I also got to place the cathetersJ. I ran the presurgical blood work and helped draw up the meds and premed the animals.

April 30th – Thursday
Surgery day. We had rads with sedation, dental and a spay. I ran the pre-surgical blood work and helped draw up the meds and premed the animals.

May 2nd – Saturday
Mad house. Fecals, nail trims, 4dx tests. I set up and scanned all the fecals and found one positive for cocci and one for teania, that was very cool. One 4dx was positive for anaplasma. I filled the Rx’s and helped with vaccines.

May 4th – Monday
We had an euthanasia with a client who took the body home with them. I thought it was kind of odd but I guess people still want to bury their animals. We did routine exams, gave boosters ran fecals and heartworm tests.
May 5th – Tuesday
Surgery day. Our one surgery for the day canceled. I ran 4dx tests, scanned fecals and restrained for blood draws.
May 6th – Wednesday
Yesterday Jill who would normally cover the front desk called in sick so Dr. Williamson asked if I could come in and help cover. We are fully booked to the rest of the week so she wanted to make sure we had enough cover. Dr Buschette is the doctor who works on Wednesdays. She wanted me to mostly cover the front desk as she is not sure of what I can and cannot do. Today I did my first Tech appointment solo. It was a single vaccine. I checked them in, got the weight, put them in the room, drew up the vaccine, gave it to the patient, checked them out and rang them up. I helped restrain while Dr Buschette lanced an anal glad abscess on a very unhappy cat. That was GROSS!!!! And very smelly. I learned how to process transactions and print up rabies certificates. I also made new charts for new clients.

May 7th – Thursday
Surgery day. We had a spay with cystotomy and an external fixator being placed on a very sweet Chihuahua that had a fracture of the front right leg. Sam had a doctor’s appointment this morning she left after we pre-meded the animals. That made me the anesthetists for the two surgeries. Dr. Rasmussen did the surgery on the Chihuahua. That was a very neat surgery to see. That little dog has been through hell, it was broken by a dog at a dog park and the other dog’s owner denied responsibility even though there were several witnesses to what happened. The spay was uneventful. we had a dog come in with an allergic reaction to something. Dr. Williamson had me go in the room and take the history and bring the dog in back for her to look over. When we did that we found a fully engorged tick walking around the dog’s back. GROSS!!! Unsure of what was causing the allergic reaction we gave the dog Benadryl.

May 8th – Friday
I only worked a half day. We had routine annual exams with vaccines and heartworm tests. Jill showed me how to trim nails on a large dog. I am still nervous about cutting nails. During the lunch time and before I left I made client calls regarding negative 4dx results.
